Tinubu’s Spending Spree: Why Nigerians Are Paying the Price for Extravagance

President Bola Ahmad Tinubu, I Totally Disagree with Your Claim of Inheriting a Dilapidated Nigeria from Former President Muhammadu Buhari: Here's Why

President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has publicly stated that he inherited a "dilapidated" Nigeria from the previous administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari. However, the actions and spending patterns of the current government contradict this narrative. Here are the reasons why I strongly disagree with President Tinubu's claim:

EXTRAVAGANT PUBLIC SPENDING UNDER YOUR ADMINISTRATION

1. Vice President's Residence Renovation - ₦21 Billion
How does one justify spending ₦21 billion on renovating the Vice President's residence if the country is indeed in a dire economic state?

2. National Assembly SUVs - ₦70 Billion
The government allocated ₦70 billion for National Assembly members to purchase SUVs, each costing ₦160 million. This raises the question: is this the best use of public funds?

3. Renovation of Dodan Barracks and Aguda House - ₦7 Billion
₦4 billion has been allocated for renovating Dodan Barracks in Lagos and another ₦3 billion for Aguda House. How does this spending align with the narrative of a struggling economy?

4. Presidential Tax Reforms Committee - ₦5 Billion
The Presidential Tax Reforms Committee, headed by Taiwo Oyedele, received ₦5 billion, yet there is little to show for this expenditure.

5. First Lady’s Cars - ₦1.5 Billion
₦1.5 billion was spent on cars for the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, despite the fact that the office of the First Lady is not constitutionally recognized.

6. Judges’ Salary Increase - 300%
A 300% salary increase for judges was swiftly passed by the Senate, despite the financial strain on the country.

7. Presidential Fleet - ₦5 Billion
Another ₦5 billion has been budgeted for the presidential fleet, while billions more are allocated for the purchase of a presidential yacht.

8. Luxury Travel Expenses
Billions of naira have been budgeted for the travels of both the President and Vice President, further straining public funds.

9. National Assembly Salaries
Senators are paid ₦21 million monthly, while House of Representatives members earn ₦13.5 million monthly. These increases have occurred under your government.

QUESTIONABLE CONTRACTS AND APPOINTMENTS

1. Illegal Road Contract - ₦15 Trillion
The Lagos-Calabar coastal road contract, worth ₦15 trillion, was allegedly awarded to your friend, Lebanese national Gilbert Chagoury, under questionable circumstances.

2. Bloated Cabinet
Your administration has the largest number of ministers in Nigeria's history, which raises concerns about the source of funds to sustain such a large cabinet.

3. Creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development
You created a new Ministry of Livestock Development, despite the existence of recommendations from the Oronsaye Report, which advised downsizing and merging government agencies.

WHERE ARE THE SUBSIDY SAVINGS?

The government removed subsidies on petroleum products and electricity, yet Nigerians have seen no tangible benefits from these savings. Citizens are demanding transparency: how much has been saved, and where is this money being spent?

 THE BURDEN ON ORDINARY NIGERIANS

  • Fuel Subsidy Removal
  • Electricity Tariff Hike
  • Unaffordable Education
  • Unaffordable Health Services
  • Soaring Food Prices
  • Increased Insecurity and Unemployment
  • Legalized Corruption and Nepotism
While the cost of governance has increased significantly under your administration, the Nigerian people have been left to bear the brunt of these economic challenges. The promises of "Renewed Hope" seem far from being realized, replaced instead with hopelessness, destitution, and deception.

The Widening Gap Between Leaders and Citizens

As the leaders continue to enrich themselves, the average Nigerian becomes poorer. The transformation of President Tinubu, both physically and financially, stands in stark contrast to the deteriorating conditions of the citizens. This trend of insensitive leadership and reckless spending must be arrested.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Addresses the Nation on Ongoing Protests

Broadcast by His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

My fellow Nigerians

  • I address you today with a heavy heart, aware of the turmoil and violent protests in some of our states.

  • Among the protesters were young Nigerians who desire a better and more progressive country where their dreams and aspirations can be fulfilled.

  • I am deeply pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states, the destruction of public facilities, and the looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of peaceful protests. This destruction sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be needed to restore them.
  • I extend my condolences to the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence, and destruction.

  • As President, I must ensure public order. Our government will not stand idly by and allow a few with a political agenda to tear this nation apart.

  • I urge protesters and organizers to suspend further protests and create room for dialogue. Nigeria requires all hands on deck, regardless of age, party, tribe, religion, or other divides. To those who threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry in the Nigeria we seek to build.

  • Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected. Law enforcement should continue to ensure the full protection of lives and properties of innocent citizens responsibly.

  • My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation where each person may enjoy peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihood provided by democratic good governance – one that is open, transparent, and accountable to the Nigerian people.

  • For decades, our economy has been stunted by misalignments. Over a year ago, Nigeria reached a point where temporary solutions could no longer solve long-term problems. I took the necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems, which had impeded our economic development..

  • These actions blocked the greed and profits of smugglers and rent-seekers, and the undue subsidies extended to neighboring countries. These decisions were necessary to reverse decades of economic mismanagement. The buck stops on my table, and I am focused on delivering good governance to the people.

  • In the past 14 months, our government has made significant strides in rebuilding our economy. Aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over 9.1 trillion Naira in the first half of 2024. Productivity is increasing in the non-oil sector, reaching new levels...

  • We have reduced our debt service ratio from 97% to 68% in the last 13 months and cleared legitimate outstanding foreign exchange obligations of about $5 billion without adverse impacts on our programs.

  • This financial freedom allows us to spend more on essential social services like education and healthcare. State and Local Governments have received the highest allocations ever from the Federation Account.

  • We have embarked on major infrastructure projects across the country, including roads, bridges, railways, power, and oil and gas developments. Projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway will create jobs and boost economic output through trade, tourism, and cultural integration...

  • Our oil and gas industry is experiencing a resurgence. We increased oil production to 1.61 million barrels per day and are receiving significant foreign investments.

  • To address our dependence on oil-based petrol, we launched the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative to power our transportation economy, reducing costs and freeing up resources for healthcare and education.

  • We will distribute a million low-cost kits to commercial vehicles, reducing transportation costs by approximately 60% and helping curb inflation.

  • We have started setting up conversion centers across the country in conjunction with the private sector..

  • Our commitment to the youth is evident in the student loan scheme, with 45.6 billion Naira processed for payment to students
  • We established the Consumer Credit Corporation with over N200 billion to help Nigerians acquire essential products without immediate cash payments.

  • We secured $620 million under the Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDiCE) program, creating millions of IT and technical jobs. Unfortunately, one of the digital centers was vandalized during the protests in Kano.

  • We introduced the Skill-Up Artisans Programme (SUPA), the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA), and the National Youth Talent Export Programme (NATEP).

  • Over N570 billion has been released to the 36 states to support livelihoods, and 600,000 nano-businesses have benefitted from our grants.

  • Additionally, 75,000 beneficiaries will receive N1 million Micro and Small Business single-digit interest loans this month. We have built 10 MSME hubs, creating 240,000 jobs, with 5 more hubs in progress.

  • 25. Payments of N1 billion each are being made to large manufacturers to boost manufacturing output.

  •  I signed the National Minimum Wage into law last week, ensuring the lowest-earning workers will now earn at least N70,000 a month.

  • We launched the Renewed Hope City and Estate project, with the first phase inaugurated in Karsana, Abuja. This project is part of six planned across the nation's geopolitical zones.

  • We are also launching the Renewed Hope Estates in every state, each comprising 500 housing units. Our goal is to complete 100,000 housing units over the next three years.

  • We are providing incentives to farmers to increase food production. Tariffs and import duties on essential food items and medical supplies have been removed for six months to drive down prices.

  • We have distributed fertilizers and ordered mechanized farming equipment to cultivate over 10 million hectares of land, putting millions to work and increasing food production.

  • My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear. We are committed to listening and addressing your concerns.
  • But we must not let violence and destruction tear our nation apart. We must work together to build a brighter future where every Nigerian can live with dignity and prosperity..

  • The task before us is a collective one, and I am leading the charge as your President. We are focused on stabilizing our economy and ensuring the benefits reach every Nigerian.

  • My administration is working hard to improve national infrastructure and create more opportunities for our youth.

  • Let nobody misinform you about your country or tell you that your government does not care. We are in a new era of Renewed Hope, and we are working hard for you.

  • Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. Choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. The economy is recovering; please, don’t shut out its oxygen. Do not let enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda.

  • Security operatives should maintain peace, law, and order while respecting human rights. The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount.

  • Thank God and thank you for your attention. May God continue to bless our great Nation.

  • -------------------------------------------------
  • Thank you very much.

Update: EndBadGovernanceInNigeria: SSS, Police shoot at peaceful protesters, Journalists in Abuja

Police in Abuja Habitually Disrupt Peaceful Protests with Tear Gas and Live Ammunition

Operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) and the police used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters and journalists in Abuja.

Masked SSS officials, dressed in black uniforms, arrived in several Toyota Sienna vans and began shooting live rounds at peaceful demonstrators at the MKO Abiola Stadium. Shortly before this, heavily armed police officers stationed at the main entrance of the stadium had fired tear gas at the protesters, leading to harassment and arrests.

Around 12:15 p.m., an SSS official wearing a black mask cocked his rifle and fired at journalists covering the protests. The bullets created pockmarks on the windscreen of one Sienna vehicle and pierced the trunk of another car transporting NIFSGISTS journalists.

THE CHAIN OF EVENTS

At 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, a small group of protesters gathered at the stadium's main entrance. Heavily armed police officers and Army personnel were stationed around the area. Deputy Commissioner of Police, FCT, Ishyaku Shuaibu, addressed journalists, stating their presence was to ensure the protest remained peaceful. However, shortly after he left, police began firing tear gas at the protesters, who had formed a circle with placards, causing chaos and dispersing the crowd and journalists.

NIFSGISTS correspondents observed police officers firing tear gas directly at the fleeing protesters and harassing and arresting some individuals caught in the smoky atmosphere.

Around 12:15 p.m., additional police vans and seven unmarked Toyota Sienna vehicles carrying masked, heavily armed SSS officers arrived. The masked men dispersed in different directions, with one SSS official shouting at journalists to leave while pointing his rifle. He then loaded his rifle and fired at journalists, causing further chaos.

Several security officials pursued the protesters and journalists. NIFSGISTS reported similar incidents of tear gas use on Thursday and Friday. Despite these disruptions, the protesters regrouped each time, determined to continue their 10 days of rage demonstrations.

A female protester collapsed after police fired tear gas on Friday. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) condemned the attack on journalists and urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and report back within 10 days. The brutal dispersal on Saturday occurred less than 24 hours after the Nigerian National Committee of International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) warned against attacking reporters covering the protests.

The protests on Saturday marked the third day of the #10daysofrage demonstration, with demands for the reintroduction of petrol subsidies and reduction in public officials' salaries and allowances.

The Nigerian Labour Congress urges the Tinubu administration to engage in dialogue with the organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its call for the President Bola Tinubu-led government to engage in dialogue with the conveners of the #EndBadGovernance protests, rather than resorting to security clampdowns. The union has also stated that it plans to hold its own protest to demand the implementation of the minimum wage agreement. This protest will proceed as planned if the government does not take action.

In a statement released on Friday by the Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, the NLC emphasized that the ongoing national protests are separate from the issue of the minimum wage.

The statement read, “We find it necessary to reiterate that in our statements of July 22nd and 23rd, 2024, we had advised the government to dialogue with the leaders instead of engaging in unhelpful rhetoric, as it was within their constitutional right to protest.”

“Our position on the government meeting with and engaging in sincere dialogue with the leaders of this action remains unchanged. It’s the best way to go,” Upah added.
