Hackers Take Over GTBank, Intercept Customers’ Data In Massive Operation
In a shocking development, suspected cybercriminals appear to have compromised the domain address of Nigeria’s banking giant, GTBank. The bank’s official website, gtbank.com, became inaccessible late Wednesday night, leaving customers unable to access their accounts online.
The incident follows the recent renewal of the domain name for another five years, which was finalized just a day earlier on August 13, 2024. Despite this, the domain was suddenly unreachable on August 14, sparking concerns among millions of GTBank customers across Nigeria and beyond.
Sources indicate that no hacker group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, preliminary investigations suggest that the attackers may have created a malicious HTTP layer of the website, designed to trick customers into providing sensitive information through phishing tactics.

A cybersecurity expert with experience in Nigeria’s banking sector theorized that the bank's login details might have been compromised rather than the domain itself being stolen for resale. This would imply a serious breach of security protocols, putting customer data at significant risk.
Customers have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration and fear, with many reporting that they were unable to access the site to conduct transactions. GTBank representatives on the platform have been responding, advising customers to be patient and directing them to alternative communication channels.
Despite the disruption to the website, GTBank's mobile banking apps on Android and iOS remain operational, offering some relief to customers during this concerning time.
As one of Nigeria’s largest banks, GTBank serves millions of clients across Nigeria and other African countries, making this security breach a major incident in the region's financial sector. The bank has yet to issue an official statement regarding the extent of the breach or the steps being taken to resolve it.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
